Shangri-la 37
Located within Toronto’s Shangri-La Residences, this west-facing unit was conceived as a study in material continuity and warm minimalism. The project explores how a limited palette—white oak, matte black detailing, and crisp white surfaces—can be orchestrated to create a space that is both serene and richly layered.
Upon entry, a white oak–paneled hallway establishes the material language of the home. Integrated millwork conceals storage while a floating matte black console introduces contrast and visual lightness, setting a quiet but deliberate tone. The hallway leads into a den, separated by fluted sliding glass panels that allow daylight to permeate the interior while maintaining privacy. Within the den, a built-in office nook is seamlessly integrated, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on function without visual clutter.
The living space unfolds as an open yet carefully articulated volume. A floating matte black entertainment unit anchors the room, while a wall-to-wall white cabinetry feature wall provides extensive concealed storage and a curated wine display. West-facing glazing floods the space with natural light throughout the day, culminating in warm sunset views that animate the oak surfaces and soften the modern palette. White oak herringbone flooring runs continuously throughout the unit, grounding the interior and reinforcing a sense of cohesion.
In the primary bedroom, a custom white oak bed with integrated floating nightstands continues the millwork narrative, creating a calm, uncluttered retreat. The adjacent walk-in closet balances generous storage with refined detailing. The primary bathroom completes the suite with a floating vanity and restrained material expression, maintaining the project’s emphasis on clarity, lightness, and proportion.
